Wine & Wildebeest Safari 2015 invitation
7-13 SEPTEMBER 2015
An exclusive Safari with De Trafford & Sijnn
Kenya has been in the news of late – for all the wrong reasons! The Al Shabab terror attack on the Garissa University in the far north of the country was shocking and abhorrent – and sadly has scared many nervous potential visitors away! Now is a great time to visit the Mara as tourist numbers will definitely be way down and sightings will thus be un-crowded by the usual throngs of minibuses. Please join Rita & I at the migration this September for a unique bucket list experience of a lifetime.
Daryl & Sharna Balfour have been among the most pre eminent wildlife photographers in Africa for the past 25 years! Join us in their special camp at what’s often referred to as the World Cup of Wildlife, migration, in Kenya’s sprawling & scenic Maasai Mara National Reserve this year in early September. Once again the Balfours will set up their truly unique “luxury mobile” tented camp in an exclusive site in one of the best game viewing areas of the Mara, with easy access to most of the popular river crossing points used by the massed herds on their migration. The other guides Pierre Burton & Phil West, have worked with Daryl for the past 15 years & your safari will be enhanced by the knowledge & skills of all three of the guides!
Our camp features spacious walk-in ‘Meru-style’ classic safari tents, each with an en suite dressing room, shower and flush toilet. The four experienced safari chefs, with guidance from Sharna, will prepare mouthwatering dishes daily, using fresh produce flown in from Nairobi, accompanied by an array of special wines. All guest tents are equipped with quality solar-powered lighting, either twin or queen-sized beds, and your personal tent steward will do your laundry & ironing daily.
Meals will be taken in our spacious & airy Mess Tent at a truly spectacular candle-lit table equipped with fine china and quality glassware. We have attempted to recreate the traditions of the classic old safaris as experienced by Ernest Hemingway, Sir Randolph Churchill, Teddy Roosevelt, Robert Ruark and many others in a
bygone era, and we believe this is the only way to avoid the mass market tourism of the bigger more established safari camps and commercial lodges.
Our days are long and action filled, spent exploring the vastness of the Mara in customized safari 4×4 vehicles. We place a premium on the wildlife experience and truly believe that the quality of our guides will ensure you have a spectacular safari, while learning much about the environment, the animals & birds that inhabit it, & having the chance to capture great photographs, while Sharna & Daryl will help with your technique both in the camera & afterwards!
SOME FINER DETAILS OF THE SAFARI
The safari begins and ends in Nairobi and because we have guests joining us from throughout the world we are unable to include the international flights in your package. You will need to make your own flight reservations to be in Nairobi in time to join our charter flight to the Mara at 1pm on the first day of the safari. Your return from the Mara on the final day will arrive in the city by midday – well in time for outgoing international flights that afternoon or evening. Many international flights arrive in Nairobi in the early morning, though some will necessitate arriving the night before & overnighting in the city. You will spend 6 nights in camp, with 5 full days in the field. Should you need, we can assist with transfers or hotel accommodation if you plan to arrive early or extend your stay.
Idyllic days on the savannah, & evenings with fine wines & good conversation at the fireside
Your eventful and full days will be spent exploring these northernmost limits of the Mara Ecosystem, seeking the area’s abundant wildlife including the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra that should be massing and fattening prior to their return to the Serengeti in the south. We have timed our safari to coincide with the best possibilities of seeing the spectacular river crossings, when thousands of wildebeest & zebra pour across the Mara River. We have a great record over the years of showing our guests these crossings, often with spectacular crocodile action too! But like anything in the world of animals, nothing can be guaranteed – though our guides will do their utmost to ensure you an experience of a lifetime.
Our daily schedule, which we adjust and fine-tune according to the movements of the wildlife and our game-viewing plans, involves a pre-dawn wake-up call followed by tea, coffee and a light breakfast in the Mess before we head offerings. Each vehicle is coffee basket along with freshly baked cookies, cinnamon buns and egg & bacon (or other) jaffles for a mid-morning stop out in the wilds. We return to camp around midday for a slap-up lunch, (perhaps a glass of dry white?), safari-goers enjoy a well-earned shower and siesta.
Afternoon ‘high tea’ will be served around 4pm, depending on how early or late we may have returned to camp for lunch, followed by the evening drive. We return to camp soon after dark – night drives are not permitted in the game reserve – for a casual fireside wine-tasting followed by an three-course dinner accompanied by fine wines specially selected for you from the De Trafford & Sijnn library cellar.
The animals and the wilderness dictate our schedule – we place more emphasis on the wildlife experience than we do on camp timetables, and the chefs and camp staff are totally adaptable to this. We work on a rotational basis in the vehicles, with guests moving each day between the three cars, ensuring all have the opportunity to spend time with us & all of our guides, including Sharna & Daryl, each with their own unique personalities, talents & abilities.
We’d love to share this awesome and safe paradise with you. Please don’t let a distant epidemic and the world-wide threat of terrorism put you off and change your life. We can assure you that out in the middle of the Mara is possibly one of the safest places you could ever be, so…
PLEASE CONTACT US NOW AT: firstname.lastname@example.org IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US THIS YEAR! WE, THE BALFOURS & THE PEOPLE OF KENYA WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU & SHARE SOME GREAT WINE & WILDLIFE IN THE AMAZING MARA!
