New Releases: Our 2014 Syrahs and our 2013 Cabernet Franc
It is always with great excitement that we release our two 2014 Syrahs. Although Cab may be king in Stellenbosch, Syrah is the most exciting red grape in the Cape and our ‘393’ vineyard has produced something quite exceptional since its first year in 1998.
I still remember the day I walked into the cellar and the air was filled with the beautiful spice of our first fermenting tank of Syrah – just enough for two small barrels. Since then we’ve had several Platter 5 stars, a Platter Red Wine of the Year for the 2008 vintage and this highest scoring SA red wine in Wine Spectator. The 2014 vintage is showing well in its youth, but still needs a few years. You can read the online tasting notes here.
The Blueprint Syrah is mostly from a specific vineyard on our neighbours Keermont vineyard. A little softer, lighter and more approachable with lovely pepper and spice and similar in style to the 2012 which was Platter Red Wine of the Year. You can read the detailed tasting notes here.
We’re sneaking in our Cabernet Franc 2013 in this release and I am quite amazed at this elegant wine. Half our fruit was blown away in the 2013 vintage, but what was left is proving outstanding. Perhaps I should have put this forward for the CWG Auction?! Expect a lean linear style with lovely herbal notes, great length and complexity. Online tasting notes available here.
