DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2012

Last weekend we had the worst wind storm we’ve seen since being on the farm for 35 years. Several oak trees around the winery have blown over or partly blown over. We have branches all over the place and the garden now smells like a cooperage! A big cleaning-up operation.
Unfortunately our vineyards have also taken quite a hammering. We have probably a 10% loss in potential fruit in our Elevation vineyard and the tops of the shoots were quite damaged with a serious tipping action.
Our Blueprint vineyard on neighbouring Keermont was rather more severely damaged with a lot of leaf shredding and probably a 50% loss. The wind was a lot stronger than in 2010 and lasted for 2 ½ days causing more general damage, but as it was later in the season the crop loss was not as significant. The berries are at lead shot stage (in between pin head & pea size) and still have enough time for the canopies to restore themselves before ripening begins around end January.
So although this has been a massive interruption to what was one of the best growing seasons that we’ve experienced, we’re still hopeful for a great 2013 vintage!
Vertical Tastings
Our informal vertical tastings have been quite popular and it has been interesting to see which vintages customers enjoy most. We have our flagship Elevation 393 vertical this Friday and the Chenin Blanc on next Friday 14 December. As before the tastings are self-help and wines will be available from 10.00 am – 4.00pm.
Next releases
We’re now sold out of the Plan B 2011 and busy getting the Chenin Blanc 2012 ready for sale end January. The label painting ‘Euphorbia and Little Creatures’ looks intriguing and the wine pretty exciting too!

The office will be closed between Monday 24 December and Thursday 3 January. We will be open for tasting and sales on Friday 28 & Saturday 29 December between 10.00 am & 1.00 pm as usual.

Hope you have a Happy Christmas and a wonderful festive season with friends & family. May 2013 bring joy & success and another successful vintage!

Kind regards,
The De Trafford Team
